Я никак не мог ожидать, что моя первая встреча с Андреем, состоявшаяся всего два месяца назад, окажется последней... Он выглядел полным жизненной энергии; немного уставшим - впрочем, как все мы в разгар полевого сезона. От меня, от имени П.А. Косинцева и всех наших свердловских коллег, которым посчастливилось работать с Андреем в этом июле и в предыдущие годы, хочу выразить глубочайшие соболезнования его семье. Сожалеем, что не можем сделать это лично.

My sincere condolences to Andrei''s family and friends. I first met Andrei in Weimar in 1985, where we spent some very enjoyable evenings, and then at various meetings over the years. I found him to be good company from the very outset, a warm-hearted and generous man, and I am pleased to have known him.

I was profoundly saddened and shocked to hear that Andrei had died. He was a person who lived life to the full. On the one hand his premature death left many of his plans and ideas unfulfilled, but on the other he had achieved so very much in his chosen field. He will be very much mourned by the scientific community to which he contributed so much.

His passing is especially poignant for me, as only a few weeks ago in June I was with him on a very enjoyable and productive two-week visit to Russia - we shared a room in St Petersburg, and a compartment on the train from Moscow to Ekaterinburg. As always he was a wonderful companion, very generous with his time, help and scientific expertise. I shall miss him greatly both as a friend and colleague.

Мои глубочайшие соболезнования родным и близким. Андрей Владимирович был ярчайшим примером преданности науке, талантливым палеонтологом, и ученым с удивительной работоспособностью, настоящим лидером по изучению мамонтов на международном уровне, неиссякающей энергией в поисках новых путей их изучения и привлечения к совместным исследованиям коллег и молодежи в этом поле. Совершенно неожиданная кончина Андрея Владимировича безусловно невосполнимая потеря и серьезный удар для российской и международной четвертичной палеонтологии. Мне посчастливилось общаться с Андреем Владимировичем во время всех мамонтовых конференций и конгресса по слонам в 2005г. в Хот Спрингсе, Южная Дакота, где он всегда представлял наиболее интересные сообщения. Теперь трудно представить эти конференции без его участия . Светлая ему память!
My sincere condolences to Andrei’s family and friends. Andrei ‘s life was a best example of devotion to paleontology. He was a talented and extraordinary hard-working scientist and a genuine leader in the mammoth studies on the international level. His inexhaustible and immeasurable energy in searching for new approaches and methods in mammoth studies, and recruiting young and talented scientists is well known. Andrei’s unexpected death is the irreplaceable loss and a hard blow for the Russian and international Quaternary paleontology. I was lucky having had a chance visiting with Andrei during all the International Mammoth Conferences and the 2005 Congress “World of Elephants” held in Hot Springs, South Dakota, where he was always presenting one of the most interesting papers. I can''t believe Andrei is gone. He was a true friend, a brilliant and innovative scientist, and a delightful field companion. I would give anything to be able to sing one more duet of "Odessa Mama" with you, Andrei, dear!

I would also like to give my deepest condolence to Andrei''s family and friends. I will always remember Andrei as an exceptional scientist and a truly honest and liberal person, like I could experience myself when I met him last year in Yakutsk. My deepest sympathies to Andrei''s family. Andrei was a gracious and kind man who will be missed by many. As a young student only a few years ago, my supervisor Charlie Schweger related many stories about the impact that Andrei had on Quaternary research on both sides of the Bering Strait. Before meeting him, I held Andrei as a legendary figure in our field. Thus, it was a wonderful pleasure to meet Andrei at the 3rd International Mammoth conference in Yukon. Of course, Andrei was a very popular man at this meeting. But, he took time to meet with young scientists like me and listened with great interest to learn more about what we were working on. We had many discussions out at the sections and later over beer at the pub about Yedoma, ground squirrels and about how Beringia worked from a Big Picture perspective. Andrei had an incredible ability to integrate and synthesize various information on geology, plants, insects, vertebrates, and climate. Andrei''s interdisciplinary approach to Beringian science will have an impact for many generations. It is sad hear that Andrei has gone the way of the mammoths.

Приехала из экспедиции и собиралась обсудить с Андреем кое-что по e-mail, открыла почту, а там... некролог. Еще месяц назад мы с ним и с Аней сидели у них на кухне, он как всегда был щедр и жизнерадостен, острил, рассказывал о своих планах... Не могу поверить. Людей такого класса как Андрей за всю жизнь встречаешь лишь несколько человек. Анечка и все родные, мои самые искренние соболезнования, разделяю вашу боль.

Знаю Андрея "всю жизнь" - со студенчества. Уже с начала 70-х годов он стал для меня корифеем, доступной и доброжелательной энциклопейдией кайнозоя. Скорблю со всеми.

I was very sorry to hear of Andrei''s passing. He was working right up until the end. He was a wonderful man and colleague. My sincere sympathies to his family.
